Royal Troon is the centrepiece of the magnificent stretch of courses on the beautiful coast of the Firth of Clyde. A classic out-and-back links, Royal Troon in the wind is a daunting challenge even for the most accomplished golfer. The course offers a great mix of holes, including the shortest Par 3 on the Championship rota (The world famous "Postage Stamp" 8th) and, until recently, the longest Par 5 (the 599 yard 6th). Golfers should aim to make their score on the easier outward nine.
Turnberry is the most scenic course on the Open Championship rota and is a must play for any serious golfer visiting Ayrshire. It was - of course - the scene of the famous Duel in the Sun in 1977 between Jack Nicklaus and the ultimately victorious Tom Watson. Turnberry is summed up simply as top class. The staff in the world- famous Turnberry Hotel are superb and the quality of service second to none. Even in the off season the courses at Turnberry are maintained in stunning condition.
Dundonald - One of the writers own particular favourites of all the Ayrshire Courses. The layout ensures every hole is isolated from any other, giving the ongoing impression that you could be the only group playing the course. Bring your best driving game here and you will be rewarded with stunning approach shots to vast, slick, undulating greens. Still developing, Dundonald will undoubtedly become one of the greats in the years to come. For now, though, the course represents incredible value for money.
